10 schools from across the island, one courtroom and an inspiring space for legal debate!.
This past weekend represented a major milestone in Cypriot legal education as we celebrated hosting the inaugural ESK Moot Conference. This event was not only a significant achievement for ESK but also the first of its kind for high school students in Cyprus. Mooting conferences are simulations of court hearings, usually conducted for second-year university law students who have some understanding of the legal field.
The event was remarkable, characterized by compelling arguments, thought-provoking debates, and a collective enthusiasm for the legal profession. Students transformed into lawyers and judges, witnesses and defendants, immersing themselves in the art of courtroom advocacy.

On the initial day, participants were organized into groups, assuming the roles of either defendants or prosecutors, and diligently examined two prior legal cases. Each group worked together to gather research and formulate persuasive arguments, enhancing their advocacy and analytical skills, while simultaneously broadening their knowledge of the legal field.
Day two brought the excitement of a real courtroom setting, where participants engaged in proceedings before our distinguished guest judge Mrs Narin Sefik, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She presided over the event, ensuring the maintenance of proper courtroom decorum. Her extensive legal expertise and experience as an integral part of the legal community lent the event an air of authenticity.

The atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation and excitement as students delivered their carefully crafted arguments and witnesses took to the stand to recount the events. It was truly inspiring to see our students demonstrate their grasp of legal protocols and courtroom etiquette in such a short period, readying themselves for the practices they will face in their future careers.

A Community Effort
The success of this event is a testament to the vibrant community that makes ESK truly special. What began as an idea and student-led initiative blossomed into reality with the unwavering support of our dedicated ESK staff and Legal advisors.

We sincerely thank guest Judge Mrs Nain Ferdi Sefik, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, for her insightful contributions that greatly enhanced the Moot experience. Her wisdom and encouragement not only inspired our students but also emphasized the significance of mentorship in cultivating the next generation of legal professionals.
We are profoundly thankful for the expertise and guidance provided by local lawyer Mr. Orhan Arsal and Bertan Ozerdag, the President of the Supreme Court. Their involvement brought an added layer of authenticity and professionalism to the proceedings.
As we reflect on this remarkable occasion, we are filled with pride and confidence in the future of legal education in Cyprus. The ESK Moot Conference has laid the groundwork for a thriving network of future legal minds and professionals and we are proud to pioneer this in Cyprus! We look forward to hosting many more Moot conferences in the coming years!
