From dominating the badminton courts to roaring on the football pitch, our athletes have truly showcased their talent and teamwork this season.
What an incredible term for our ESK Lions sports team!
FOOTBALL
On the football field, our roar made waves in Ankara, Türkiye. The teams displayed remarkable determination and team spirit throughout the Turkish International Schools League tournament.
The KS4-5 Boys team showcased incredible ball control, agility and teamwork throughout the tournament, obtaining a goal tally so high it was hard to keep track! The enthusiasm was palpable on Day 1, with two wins and one tie, a strong sense of camaraderie and passion for the game was shining through. On Day 2, competition intensified in the 3rd and 4th place playoffs, where the scores were level until the final 10 minutes, and the boys narrowly missed victory. Our Boys' team finished a commendable 4th place, with Taura earning the MVP (Most Valuable Player) title for his incredible ball control and skills.
The KS3-5 girls encountered a challenging start on Day 1, having an average age significantly lower than most competing teams. Nevertheless, with the energetic backing from our boys' team, a robust team spirit and growing confidence on the pitch, they achieved an amazing 3rd place finish. With Nehir's solid defence play and heading abilities, along with Dila's stand-out goal-scoring, both players were voted as the MVPs of the tournament!
In October, our KS3 Boys team made their debut on the football field at another inter-school tournament in Ankara, finishing in a respectable 5th place.
We are truly proud of their efforts. Their passes were well-placed, and significant progress was evident throughout the matches. On the journey home, they reflected on the key lessons learned—maintaining a positive attitude, fostering teamwork, and demonstrating perseverance were their true accomplishments.
Morale is certainly high and our Lions are ready to take on local schools in Limassol this month.
BADMINTON
Last term, we had the privilege of hosting our annual Turkish International School League (TISL) Badminton Tournament at ESK. We welcomed three schools from Ankara, Turkey, and two local schools for some friendly competition.
The boys dominated their matches in both singles and doubles during the TISL tournament, achieving an outstanding 1st place. Jacob was recognised as the player with the most stand-out performances but was very well backed up by Ivan, Vasily and Mehmet.
Our Girls' team was not far behind, performing well in both their singles and doubles matches. All athletes demonstrated remarkable composure to navigate through several challenging matches. Following a thrilling finals match against the local school GAU, the girls' team earned a very respectable 2nd place and the Girls' B team secured a commendable 4th place.
Gulce and Sofiya proved a formidable doubles partnership, spearheading the attack and winning all their group matches, while Eda won all of her singles matches in the group stages.
The local Ministry Badminton Tournament saw the girls' squad of Almila, Maisie, Gulce and Sofiya take on schools from around the TRNC. The girls played exceptionally well in the group stages coming 4th place.
What an amazing season for our ESK Lions! Our talented athletes deserve heartfelt congratulations for their outstanding achievements. We extend our gratitude to our dedicated coaches, Mr. Lacey, Mr. Aktansoy, Mrs. Guler, and Mr. Yeşilada, for their unwavering support, guidance and inspiration.
The unity and camaraderie among the sports teams are remarkable; we are one team, one family!
